Glashütte Original Calibre 37 makes its debut with the dressy Senator Chronograph Panorama Date and the vintage inspired Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date.

Earlier this year, Glashütte Original (GO) presented at Baselworld a new chronograph movement, the Calibre 37. The first models to be powered by it are the dressy Senator Chronograph Panorama Date and the vintage inspired Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date. Both models will be available first in the Saxon manufactory’s own boutiques and later through the watchmaker’s dealers.

With the Calibre 37, GO was looking to achieve a functional easy to use chronograph with compact design and excellent rate of precision.

The manufactory-made 4Hz automatic movement assures maximum functionality through its efficient and reduced method of construction. An example is the switch lever; in the new chronograph, in contrast to previous designs, it is comprised of only one part. The new movement thus guarantees the highest possible switching security, with room for error and susceptibility to interference effectively reduced to near zero.

The chronograph’s reliability is enhanced by the space-saving coupling clutch, which operates by means of an oscillating pinion. It was designed to travel the same short path when both engaging and disengaging the clutch.

Sophisticated technical solutions assure the new chronograph’s particularly high degree of precision. Adjustment is handled without a regulator using four gold screws on the balance wheel, which permits a continuous and thus more precise performance of the watch over an especially long period of time.

With a power reserve of 70 hours when fully wound, the new automatic Calibre 37 represents an absolute peak value in the realm of mechanical chronographs. In order to keep the performance and amplitude stable over the entire period of time, a new oscillation system with low energy requirements was developed, managed by a single spring barrel. Optimal translation between spring barrel and oscillation system assures very solid and precise performance with no deviations over 70 hours.

The platinum version of the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date

First, let’s take a look at the elegant Senator Chronograph Panorama Date that comes in two versions, one with a platinum case and hand-finished silver dial and the other with a red gold case and lacquered silver grained dial.

The platinum version features a superb silver dial with laser-engraved black tachometric scale, railroad chapter ring and Roman numerals; all engravings are filled in black before the gold dial is polished in preparation for subsequent silver plating. The process, known as “silver plating by friction”, involves the application by hand of a fine silver powder, resulting in a beautiful, durable and unique dial. A second version in this debut edition features a lacquered silver grained dial with black railroad chapter ring and black Roman numerals set within a satin brushed and polished case in 18 carat red gold.

The dial presents an elegant 12 hour chronograph counter at 12 o’clock, while the Panorama Date display with black numerals on an ivory ground is positioned at the centre of the lower half of the dial. The small seconds dial with black and white power reserve indicator appears at 9 o’clock, the 30 minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock. All hands are in blued steel, and the dial is framed by a slim, elegant bezel and case in satin brushed and polished platinum or red gold.

A domed sapphire crystal, antireflective on both sides, protects the dial side, while a second sapphire crystal set in the case back opens up the automatic movement for closer inspection. Among the exquisite features on view are the rotor and chronograph bridges mounted on the Glashütte three-quarter plate; Glashütte stripe finish on the automatic bridge, blued screws, and the central skeletonized 21-ct gold rotor with double-G logo.

The platinum version is fitted with a blue Louisiana Alligator leather strap and fold-over clasp in platinum; the red gold version is fitted with a mat black Louisiana Alligator leather strap and fold-over clasp in 18 carat red gold.

Price of the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in red gold is USD $31,500 or CAD $32,800, while the platinum version goes for USD $55,600 or $57,900 if you will pay with loonies.

With the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date, the new Calibre 37 find itself in a robust, sporty looking stainless steel case. It has three dial versions: galvanised ruthenium, galvanised silver and powerful blue.

All three dial versions are artfully decorated with a sun-burst finishing. The indexes are in white gold, the hour and minute hands in white gold with Super-LumiNova highlights for improved legibility. The dials are framed by a polished, soft-cornered square bezel and satin brushed case in stainless steel that underscores the distinctive, vintage Seventies look and feel.

Bracelets in stainless steel, Louisiana alligator leather and rubber complete the contemporary design of this vintage inspired piece.
