One-of-a-kind OMEGA Seamaster celebrating 50th anniversary of Goldfinger
It was 50 years ago that, on September 17th that Goldfinger was premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. Leicester Square was packed with sightseers and fans and police were unable to control the crowd due to the number of people. A set of glass doors to the cinema was accidentally broken and the premiere was shown ten minutes late because of the confusion.
To celebrate this golden anniversary, Omega created a one-of-a-kind 18K yellow-gold Seamaster Aqua Terra. This very special timepiece sold for 106,000 CHF (more than $124,000 CAD) on Wednesday 17 September as part of an online auction that celebrated the renowned James Bond film. The winning bid was nearly eight times the estimated value of the watch!
With this outstanding result, this OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra is considered to be the most successful item in this online auction and it was the only item to make such a drastic jump from its published estimated price to its final price.
The 38.5 mm 18K yellow gold case and is presented on a matching bracelet. The dial has also been created from 18K yellow gold and the 18K yellow gold hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. In a subtle nod to the world’s most celebrated secret agent, there is a counterweight (in 18K yellow gold of course!) on the central seconds hand crafted in the form of the iconic 007 logo.
It is powered by the OMEGA Master Co-Axial calibre 8501, featuring a yellow gold rotor and bridge, revealed through its transparent crystal caseback.
The words engraved on the 18K yellow gold ring around the transparent caseback tell the story: GOLDFINGER, 50TH ANNIVERSARY, UNIQUE PIECE, ANTI-MAGNETIC, > 15,000 GAUSS.
It was delivered in a special presentation box, with a design inspired by the target of the villain, the U.S. Bullion Depository building.
