Chopard introduced the Mille Miglia collection in 1988, celebrating its partnership with “la corsa più bella del mondo”, an annual rally of classic and vintage cars, stretching from Brescia to Rome, and back. This collection is all about classic racing style, potent energy, speed, precision, and elegance.

In 2016, the Mille Miglia collection received two limited-edition models: the Mille Miglia 2016 XL Race Edition, a 46 mm chronograph, and the 43 mm Mille Miglia GTS Automatic Speed black which is actually a DLC coated version of the Mille Miglia GTS Automatic launched last year.

Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Mille Miglia 2016 XL Race Edition is inspired by the design codes of the cars that took part in the historical race between 1927 and 1940. The XL in the name stands for its 46 mm-diameter case, that makes it the largest of the Mille Miglia wrist chronographs created by Chopard. The two tradition chronograph pushers are paired with a typical Chopard Mille Miglia-style fluted crown.

Unlike previous versions of the Mille Miglia chronographs, on the circular satin-brushed black dial, the three subdials are laid out horizontally and the date window is placed between 4 and 5 o’clock, while 12 o’clock is reserved for the “Rossa Corsa” red arrow-shaped Mille Miglia logo that we can also find on the back of the watch.

The 2016 XL Race brings a completely new engine, the COSC certified Chopard Calibre 03.05-C column wheel chronograph with a power reserve of 60-hours.

The watch is matched with a brown SUPORTLO calfskin strap with vintage treatment, to acquire a weathered look over time.

Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Mille Miglia GTS Automatic Speed black with its large numerals recalling the dashboard of a racing car from the 1950s, its engine style finishing and its black rubber strap with vintage Dunlop racing tyre-tread motif, makes it a racing beast with a good-old-days charm.

The 43 mm case is entirely treated with black DLC coating, that only looks cool but it also protects it from scratches. The velvet-finished black dial offers a fantastic backdrop to the Super-LuminNova coated indexes, hands and bold numerals. To add more action, the black date window is included in the Rossa Corsa red Mille Miglia logo at 3 o’clock.

The black theme is used on the back of the watch too, the see-through crystal is tinted and the surrounding bright red gasket provides a great view of the COSC-certified Chopard Calibre 01.01-M movement, with its engine-style finishes and its open-worked oscillating weight. The Haute-horology finishing of the movement is also inspired by vintage motorsport, the grooved bridges are echoing the cooling fins on racing cars.

As a graphic designer, I'm fascinated by the crossroads between technology and aesthetics. Horology is one of these crafts, where art and engineering come together to produce mechanical wonders that grace the eye. WatchPaper was born from the desire to create an online tool where I can share my passion for watches.
